Monosodium glutamate is an amino acid (with the mineral sodium attached to it), manufactured chemically and used as a flavor enhancer, balancing the total “perception” of other tastes in the food, making your brain chemistry think the food taste different than it does. Glutamate is glutamic acid, a non-essential amino acid found in abundance in both plant and animal protein. But, did you know that in humans, this non-essential amino acid means that the body is capable of producing its own glutamic acid and does not dependent upon ingested food? Glutamic acid serves as a neurotransmitter vital to the transmission of nerve impulses in many parts of the central nervous system. Sounds good so far, so why all the fuss? Under certain circumstances, glutamic acid becomes a neurotoxin, causing neuron degeneration and cell death.

When glutamic acid is “created” it changes its form and becomes totally different from the unadulterated, unprocessed and unfermented glutamic acid produced by the body. The glutamic acid formed in the body is called L-glutamic. So here in lies the problem; in manufacturing glutamic acid it’s accompanied by impurities and produced through carcinogenic (toxic) methods. And when people ingest amounts that exceed their individual tolerance levels the complaints from the list below have been reported. MSG fed to the very young has shown to cause brain damage and therefore, learning, behavioral and endocrine disorders as well as gross obesity. So this is why all the fuss!!!

Other known effects of MSG:

  • confusion
  • chest pain
  • pressure on the head
  • seizures
  • headache
  • nausea
  • burning sensations
  • tightening in the face

This is the thing—I want you to have a blessed year in 2013. And what that means is you becoming knowledgeable about what you put in your body. That can be the difference between making your body weak or making it strong. FYI: The liver has a very hard time eliminating any toxin, so it gets stored in our fat cells. And MSG is no exception. The shame of the whole thing is that the government allows this in our foods. A report from the (FASEB) Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology compiled in 1995 on behalf of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that MSG is safe. However, based only on testimonials, MSG caused symptoms. So, in conclusion, who’s listening? Who cares?

How can we stop manufacturers from putting chemicals in our foods? It starts with you as a consumer. Be aware of everything you purchase. Just because it says “Natural” on the front label does not make it good or natural for that matter. After all, glutamate is “natural.”

Since 1998 MSG cannot be included in the term as spices and flavorings. BUT, because of the lack of FDA regulations, MSG can be labeled as “natural flavor!”

By now, you’re aware that it’s going to take work to find these ingredients on food labels. Well ladies, you work really hard at picking out the right kind of makeup. And men, you take a long time picking out a tie or a pair of shoes to go with an outfit. So drop the excuses, stop complaining and get to work on your health. It’s all you’ve got. My mother use to say ‘If you don’t have your health, you have nothing’.
